Let’s face it; we all stress about getting and looking older to some degree. But there are some things we do that have a devastating effect on our appearance, and we have no idea.
To that end, here are 6 habits that are making you age faster.
Not Minding that Sweet Tooth
If the promise of losing that last 5 pounds doesn’t get rid of that sweet tooth, maybe the desire for younger looking skin will. Experts now believe that a lifetime of overeating sugar can make skin dull and wrinkled.
Sugar in it’s natural form can be rich in vitamins and minerals, but refined sugar (which is the most common type) contains zero nutrients.
You Stress Over Every Little Thing
Everybody worries. Some of us worry too much. If this sounds like you, you need to give the worry a rest.
I recently came across a great book by Dr. Martin Rossman, called “The Worry Solution”.
In it, Dr. Rossman helps you harness the healing power of the mind to invigorate the emotional and intuitive parts of your brain and enhance your problem-solving abilities.
Meditation, prayer, physical activity and exercise are also great options that can help you maintain emotional and mental balance, and keep stress away.
You’re Too Busy to Chill with Friends
Maintaining healthy social connections “improves well being”. In addition, researchers have found that feeling isolated from others can:
- disrupt sleep
- elevate blood pressure
- increase morning rises in the stress hormone cortisol
- alter gene expression in immune cells
- increase depression, and lower overall subjective well-being
You Don’t Wear Sunscreen
Researchers from the Queensland Institute of Medical Research in Australia found that daily sunscreen use can stop (you read that right) your skin from aging.
The goal of the study was to determine whether regular use of sunscreen could “retard skin aging”. The conclusion? In short, “Regular sunscreen use retards skin aging in healthy, middle-aged men and women”.
You Don’t Exercise Regularly
The benefits of exercise are shocking, and you can’t achieve, or maintain better health without it. Exercise helps you to:
- Sleep better
- Lose weight, gain weight or maintain weight, depending on your needs
- Improve your resistance to fight infections
- Lower your risk of cancer, heart disease and diabetes
- Help your brain work better, making you smarter
You Don’t Get Enough Sleep
It’s been said that in order to maintain awesome skin and general well being, we should shoot for an ideal 8 hours of “beauty rest” a night.
A recent study also found that sleep-deprived people were perceived to look sadder than they did after a good night’s sleep.
A study done by Estee’ Lauder revealed that poor sleepers had increased signs of skin aging and slower recovery from a variety of environmental stress.
The study also found that sleep deprived women tend to show signs of premature skin aging, and a decrease in their skin’s ability to recover after exposure to the sun.
